Fire in the Sky

Yesterday afternoon was a very dark, cloudy, rainy afternoon. Lots of thunder and lightning, but also lots of rain, which makes our lawns and gardens very happy…
My wife and I were hoping to drive out to the beach to just sit by the waves and read for awhile after dinner, but we didn’t think we were going to be able to do it because of the rough weather. However, just as we were finishing dinner and were about to call off the drive, the rain let up and it seemed like it was going to be okay. So we drove to the beach and set up our chairs and we read for an hour or so, feeling a nice, cool breeze, watching and listening to the waves, and just relaxing. Lots of clouds still, so we had no expectations for any sort of sunset display.
When we decided that it was time to leave, we picked up our chairs and walked back toward the car. About halfway to the car, we noticed a tiny little break in the clouds in the lower western sky. As we got closer, the break opened a little wider and we saw a faint streak of red. And then it got brighter. And I ran to the car and grabbed my camera and ran back. And, though I know that my Post title may sound hokey, this really did look like Fire in the Sky! I love St. Petersburg – the sun always does its best to make its presence known… (just for the record, the photo is absolutely virgin – I did NOT do any sort of processing to alter or enhance the colors.  What you see is exactly the way the sky looked for a few, brief minutes last night!)

Thanks, Mary – since I just started writing a couple of weeks ago, I know that there’s not a huge audience that’s found me yet, so I sort of feel as though I’m writing to myself! Nice to know that somebody out there is reading…
