Visitors to downtown St. Petersburg have an easy and inexpensive option when it comes to getting from place to place. There are two bus lines (but they’re designed to look like trolleys, and if you look at the sign on the top of the side of the car, they’re even called ‘St. Petersburg Trolley’.) One is the ‘Downtown Looper’, the other is called the Central Avenue Shuttle. Their respective names tell the tale: The Downtown Looper loops around the downtown area of St. Petersburg, and the Central Avenue Shuttle ventures down Central Avenue a bit further, heading west as far as 31st Street, before turning back toward dowtown.
Each of the lines runs every 15 minutes during operating hours. And each costs only 25 cents to board and ride. Once you get off, if you get back on later, it’s another quarter. The trolleys are a very convenient and inexpensive way to get around downtown or to head down Central. Most of the time, when I see these trolleys, they look well-populated, so this appears to be a service that holds great appeal to those who are tired of walking.
In addition to their regular routes, the trolleys also run from remote parking lots to a variety of special events in St. Petersburg.
